Stonehedge Fiber Milling Equipment Incorporated
East Jordan, Michigan
Stonehedge Fiber Milling Equipment provides quality fiber processing machinery for all aspects of turning raw fiber into top-quality rovings for sale to handspinners and yarn for sale to knitters and weavers. My wife Debbie started Stonehedge Fiber Mill in 1998. She started with equipment that was available on the market at that time. Her intent was to start the business as a way of adding diversity to our farm, adding value to our fiber and that of a few others. Her goal was to process 500 pounds a month by the end of the first year. In less than 12 months we found that the machinery we had purchased was not capable of attaining those numbers with a reasonable amount of labor or maintenance. At that time she was only washing, picking, and carding roving and batts. She soon decided that if she were going to continue, she needed machinery that would meet her needs. She gave me the challenge of providing her the equipment to meet her goals. That challenge led to my current fiber processing equipment. I retired from General Motors with 30 years of management experience in production, time study, methods, and engineering. This background enabled me to put together the resources I needed to meet Debbie's challenge. With this equipment, we currently process in excess of 1500 pounds of fiber monthly. The machinery we manufacture is a team effort. The machine builder, Brian Stanek, and our electrician are important parts of the team and will be involved with the machinery for many years to come. Therefore, this is not a one-man operation with no back-up support for future needs. The additional machines we make available that we do not manufacture also come from well-established businesses. It's important to me that anyone who invests in setting up and running a fiber processing mill understands the time and money needed before they start. For more information, see the business planning page. Information about our fiber processing machines can be found at carding machine, picker and tumbler, spinner, pindrafter, needle felter, and skein and conewinders. And, of course, contact us if you have any questions or would like to visit the mill. |
